SnoopSoft Dashboard Enhanced Mail Module

Why are there 2 Mail Modules from SnoopSoft?

SnoopSoft Dashboard Mail support now comes in two versions: The Mail module that ships with SnoopSoft Dashboard; and a new Enhanced Mail module that is available as a separate purchase. The main reason that the enhanced mail module is available as a separate purchase and not part of the base install is due to the amount of time spent adding the new features and the relatively small number of users requesting such features.

The differences between the SnoopSoft Dashboard Mail module (that's part of SnoopSoft Dashboard) and the Enhanced Mail module are as follows:

  • The SnoopSoft Dashboard Mail module is limited to the ActiveSync Inbox (Outlook) service only, but the Enhanced Mail module has no such limitation and can view mail from virtually any mail service configured on the device.
  • The SnoopSoft Dashboard Mail module is limited to read-only and cannot create a new message, reply to a message or forward a message. The Enhanced Mail module has no such limitations.

As with all of our products, the Enhanced Mail module is being released with a good deal of functionality, but it will be up to you, the users, that ultimately determine the final feature set and functionality of the product. If the response to the Enhanced Mail module is positive, we will continue to expand and enhance its functionality.

How do I activate the Mail Module?

If you are running the registered version of SnoopSoft Dashboard and the mail module is not active, or you installed the Enhanced Mail module but don't see the new functionality, then you need to activate the module on the Mail view. You can activate the module by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Mail View in SnoopSoft Dashboard
  2. Tap on the Options Icon and the Options dialog will open to the Mail tab
  3. Select the Dashboard_MailFull.dll entry in the Available Plug-Ins combo-box
Mail Services Header

The Mail Services Header displays the currently active Service (Enhanced Mail module only) as well as the number of read/unread messages in the message store. In the Enhanced Mail module, tapping on the Mail Services Header will allow for switching between multiple mail Services by displaying a listing of all available Mail Services configured on the device. In the Pocket PC 2002 and 2003 releases, the default Mail module will allow you to select any top-level Inbox folder by tapping on the Mail header.

Message Header

The Mail Message Header area displays the date/time that the message was received. To conserve space, if the message was received on the current day, the time is displayed, and if the message was received on a previous date, just the date is displayed. On the first line is the message subject and the date/time information for the message. The second line shows who the message is from as well as the size of the message. Unread messages are displayed in bold.

Message Preview

Below the Mail Message Header is the optional two line Mail Preview. When formatting the text for the Mail Preview, the SnoopSoft Dashboard Mail Module will remove all line feeds to display as much text as possible within the two lines. Another feature of the Mail module is the ability to display a message preview for only unread messages.

Viewing Messages

To view a message, simply tap on the message header and SnoopSoft Dashboard will display the entire message.

The message window is separated into to parts - the Header and the Message. The Header tab shows the date/time that the message was sent, who sent it and the subject. The Message tab shows the message body. Separating them out this way leaves more room for the message text making it easier to read.

Along the top of the message window are buttons

  • View Previous Message (up arrow)
  • View Next Message (down arrow)
  • Delete Message (red X) [Available in Enhanced Mail Module]
  • Attachments (paperclip)
  • Attachments and Reply/Forward (envelope) [Available in Enhanced Mail Module]

If a message has attachments, tapping on the paperclip will bring up a menu that shows the size of all attachments and allows for downloading/viewing of the attachments by selecting them from the menu.

Also, with the Enhanced Mail module comes the ability to reply and forward mail messages. There is an envelope button that allows for replying/forwarding messages directly from the message window. These options are also available by tapping and holding down on the message directly on the Today screen.

Options

Show 'From' and 'Size' Info

Enables/disables the display of the second line of each mail header which displays the 'From' and 'Size' data for the message. To maximize the use of space, uncheck this option and SnoopSoft Dashboard will only use one line to display each email instead of the two lines that it uses by default.

Show Mail Separator Line

Display a line between each message in the view to better separate them.

Round Size to nearest 1 K

Round message sizes to nearest 1K which mimics what the Pocket Inbox does. If this option is not checked, SnoopSoft Dashboard will always display the actual size of the message without rounding.

Preview [disabled | Unread Messages | All Messages]

If set to 'All Msgs.', this option enables the display of a 2 line preview of the email message beneath the mail header information. This is the default setting and allows you to quickly scan messages based on the first few lines of content.

If set to 'Unread Msgs.' then the preview will only appear for messages that have not yet been read.

If set to 'disabled', then no preview lines are displayed and more messages can be listed on one screen.

Signatures - New for the Enhanced Mail Module!

The SnoopSoft Dashboard Enhanced Mail module allows support for TEXT files to be used as Signatures on your email messages. You can setup separate signatures for New messages as well as Reply/Forward messages. Additionally, the Enhanced Mail module will allow you to setup one set of Signature files to be used for all Mail Services, but also allows the flexibility of overriding one or both signatures for a specific Mail Service.

To configure the Signatures, tap on the 'Signatures...' button on the Options dialog and the Signatures dialog will appear.

Enable Mail Signatures

If this option is checked, Mail Signatures are enabled for the Enhanced Mail module for SnoopSoft Dashboard and the Signature file(s) configured will be used when composing messages. If this option is not checked, then all other fields on this dialog will be disabled (however, they will still retain their values to ease configuration when the Signature functionality is enabled again.

Service

This drop list contains a listing of all services configured on the device as well as a global 'All Services' option. To configure a Signature to be used for All Services then select the 'All Services' entry and configure the mail signature file by tapping on the 'Browse...' button for the desired signature. Locate a TEXT file on your device to use as a signature for your mail messages.

If a Signature file is configured for the 'All Services' entry, then the Signature file(s) can remain blank for all other services and when new mail is composed, it will first check for a Signature file for that particular service, but if none is found, it will then check for a Signature file for 'All Services' to use instead.

For Example:

Suppose that you have 3 personal Mail Services configured on your device, and 1 work-related Mail Service. To use the same Signature on all personal Services, but a different signature for the work-related service you would set it up in the following manner:

First, you would configure the 'All Services' entry with your personal Signature file(s).

Next, you would select the work-related service in the Service drop list and then configure the work-related Signature file(s) for that service. That's it - the Enhanced Mail module will then do the rest for you by determining what service is in use when a new message is composed and then use the appropriate Signature file.
